How to Log In to ChatGPT — Email, SSO, 2FA, and Password Reset

Accessing your ChatGPT account takes under a minute through any supported method. This guide covers every login option, explains how to secure your account with two-factor authentication, and walks through password recovery when you get locked out.

ChatGPT Login Methods at a Glance

ChatGPT supports four login methods: email with password, Google SSO, Microsoft SSO, and Apple SSO. Two-factor authentication adds a second verification layer using authenticator apps. Sessions persist across browser tabs and sync across devices including web, iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows. Password reset is available via email link. Supported browsers include Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Brave. Enterprise users authenticate through SAML-based SSO configured by their organization's IT administrator.

Logging In to ChatGPT with Email and Password

The default login method for accounts created with an email address.

Open your web browser and navigate to the ChatGPT platform. Look for the "Log In" button in the top right corner of the page. Click it to reach the authentication screen.

Enter the email address you used when creating your ChatGPT account. Type your password in the field below. If your credentials are correct, ChatGPT loads your conversation dashboard with full access to your chat history, custom instructions, saved GPTs, and any active subscription features.

Password requirements mandate a minimum of eight characters, at least one uppercase letter, and at least one number. Avoid reusing passwords from other services. A unique, strong password is your first line of defense against unauthorized access. The NIST cybersecurity guidelines recommend passphrases of 12 or more characters for stronger protection.

If you created your account through Google, Microsoft, or Apple and then try to log in with email and password, the system will not recognize your credentials. You must use the same SSO provider you originally registered with. Check the sections below for SSO-specific instructions.

Using Google, Microsoft, or Apple SSO to Access ChatGPT

Single sign-on lets you authenticate with credentials you already manage elsewhere.

Google SSO for ChatGPT

On the login screen, click "Continue with Google." A Google authentication window opens. Select the Google account linked to your ChatGPT registration, or enter your Google email and password if you are not already signed in. After Google verifies your identity, you return to ChatGPT fully authenticated. Google SSO uses OAuth 2.0, which means ChatGPT never sees or stores your Google password.

Microsoft SSO for ChatGPT

Click "Continue with Microsoft" on the login screen. Enter your Microsoft account email (Outlook, Hotmail, or organizational account). Complete Microsoft's authentication flow, which may include your password and any Microsoft-configured MFA step. After successful verification, you land in the ChatGPT conversation interface. Organizations using Microsoft 365 can provision ChatGPT access through their existing Azure AD tenant.

Apple SSO for ChatGPT

Click "Continue with Apple" on the login screen. Apple's authentication dialog appears, asking for your Apple ID credentials. If you use Face ID or Touch ID on a supported device, biometric verification replaces password entry. Apple's "Hide My Email" feature generates a unique relay address if you choose not to share your real email. ChatGPT receives the relay address and all communications route through Apple's privacy system.

Regardless of which SSO provider you use, ChatGPT syncs your conversations, settings, and subscription status the same way. SSO simply replaces the password verification step with your provider's authentication infrastructure. For additional help, visit the help centre.

Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication on ChatGPT

Add a second verification step that blocks unauthorized access even if someone learns your password.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) requires a time-based one-time password (TOTP) from an authenticator app each time you log in. This means a stolen password alone cannot grant access to your ChatGPT account. The setup process takes about two minutes.

Log in to ChatGPT, click your profile icon in the bottom left, and select Settings. Navigate to the Security section. Click "Enable two-factor authentication." ChatGPT displays a QR code on screen.

Open your authenticator app — Google Authenticator, Authy, Microsoft Authenticator, or any TOTP-compatible app — and scan the QR code. The app generates a six-digit code that refreshes every 30 seconds. Enter the current code into the ChatGPT verification field and click Confirm.

ChatGPT then presents a set of recovery codes. Save these in a secure location separate from your authenticator device. If you lose access to your authenticator app (phone lost, app deleted, device reset), recovery codes are the only way back into your account without contacting support. Each recovery code works once. After using one, it is permanently consumed.

With 2FA enabled, every future login prompts for the six-digit code after your password or SSO authentication. Enterprise users whose organizations enforce SAML SSO may have 2FA managed at the identity provider level rather than within ChatGPT directly. Learn more about ChatGPT's security layers on the security page.

How to Reset Your ChatGPT Password

Recover access in under five minutes when you forget your password.

On the ChatGPT login page, click "Forgot password?" directly below the password input field. Enter the email address associated with your account. ChatGPT sends a password reset email within a few minutes. Check your inbox, including the spam and promotions folders if the email does not appear promptly.

Click the reset link in the email. You arrive at a page where you create a new password. The new password must meet the same requirements: minimum eight characters, at least one uppercase letter, at least one number. After setting the new password, ChatGPT redirects you to the login page where you can sign in with your updated credentials.

The reset link expires after 24 hours. If you do not use it within that window, return to the login page and request a new one. There is no limit to how many reset requests you can make, but only the most recent link remains valid.

If you registered through Google, Microsoft, or Apple SSO, the "Forgot password?" option does not apply. Reset your password through your SSO provider instead. If you are unsure which method you used to register, try each SSO button on the login page. The correct provider will recognize your account. If none work, contact ChatGPT support for assistance recovering your account.

ChatGPT Session Management and Multi-Device Access

Stay logged in across devices with automatic conversation syncing.

ChatGPT sessions persist until you explicitly log out or your session token expires. On the web, sessions typically last 14 days before requiring re-authentication. Mobile apps maintain longer sessions using secure device-level token storage. Closing the browser tab does not end your session.

You can be logged in on multiple devices simultaneously. Open ChatGPT on your desktop browser, iPhone, Android phone, and iPad all at once. Conversations sync in real time. Start a chat on your laptop during the workday and continue from your phone on the commute home. Custom instructions, saved GPTs, and subscription features follow your account across every device.

To end all active sessions, go to Settings and look for "Log out of all devices." This terminates every session except the one you are currently using. Use this feature if you suspect unauthorized access or if you logged in on a shared or public computer. After logging out all devices, change your password and review recent chat history for any unfamiliar activity.

Enterprise administrators can configure session policies through the admin console. Policies may include maximum session duration, idle timeout thresholds, IP-based restrictions, and mandatory re-authentication intervals. These controls help organizations comply with the FERPA regulations and other data governance requirements that affect educational and government institutions using ChatGPT.

Frequently Asked Questions About ChatGPT Login

Troubleshooting tips for the most common login and authentication issues.

Why can't I log in to ChatGPT?

The most common cause is using a different login method than the one you registered with. If you created your account with Google SSO, the email/password login will not work — you must click "Continue with Google." Other causes include expired sessions, incorrect passwords, browser cache conflicts, and ad-blocking extensions that interfere with the authentication flow. Clear your browser cache, disable extensions, or try an incognito window. If nothing works, request a password reset or contact support.

How do I reset my ChatGPT password?

Click "Forgot password?" on the login page. Enter the email address associated with your account. Open the reset link in the email that arrives (check spam if needed). Create a new password with at least eight characters, one uppercase letter, and one number. The link expires after 24 hours. SSO users should reset their password through Google, Microsoft, or Apple instead, since ChatGPT does not store SSO passwords.

How do I set up two-factor authentication on ChatGPT?

Log in, open Settings, go to Security, and click "Enable two-factor authentication." Scan the displayed QR code with an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, or Microsoft Authenticator). Enter the six-digit code from the app to confirm. Save the recovery codes in a secure location. From that point forward, every login requires both your password (or SSO) and the rotating six-digit code from your authenticator app.

Can I log in to ChatGPT on multiple devices?

Yes. ChatGPT allows simultaneous sessions on unlimited devices for personal accounts. Conversations, custom instructions, and subscription features sync across web browsers, the iOS app, the Android app, and desktop applications. Enterprise administrators may restrict concurrent sessions through admin console policies. If a session is terminated remotely, you simply log in again on that device.

Which browsers work with ChatGPT?

ChatGPT fully supports the latest versions of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Microsoft Edge, and Brave. All Chromium-based browsers generally work without issues. Internet Explorer is not supported. Keep your browser updated for the best performance and security. If you encounter rendering problems or failed message sends, disable browser extensions temporarily or switch to an incognito window to rule out extension conflicts.
